Gangtok: Women workers of the newly formed Sikkim Krantikari Morcha were assaulted by male police officers on February 11, after they allegedly threw plastic bottles at Chief Minister Pawan Chamling's car. The Inspector General of Police of the area, Akshay Sachdeva ordered a lathicharge inside the office of the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha, even as the process to identify the miscreants who threw plastic bottles on Chamling's car was on.
In a video, which has gone viral on YouTube, the IGP is seen instigating police officers to lathicharge and commanding them to "spare nobody". He also said they would be called eunuchs if they spared the women workers at the office.
No female officer was present when the incident took place. Bharti Sharma, who recently made history when she was appointed the working president of a major political party in the state, is still in hospital, and under arrest.
Kala Rai, another office bearer, who is also under arrest, is now in the psychiatric ward due to the deep trauma and depression she is suffering from after the brutal beating by the police. A total of 13 arrests have been made so far.
Amid demands for the IGP to step down, the party has now filed a case in the Sikkim High Court demanding a judicial enquiry.
