Silk is in tune with music at Chennai fest

Chennai: The December Festival in Chennai is not only about music. For the Carnatic women vocalists, what they wear matters as much as how well they perform.

And what better time then the festival to display their best and the brightest collection of the authentic Kancheepuram silk sarees.

"I think Kancheepuram silk brings completion to the stage. It’s rich colourwise and the silk combined with the vibrant colours is a beautiful combination,” says Carnatic vocalist Sudha Raghunathan.

“Sari and Carnatic music go together very well. Silk sari is a favourite among the singers,” says another Carnatic vocalist, Nityasree Mahadevan.

Tuning silk with Carnatic music, each singer makes her own fashion statement taking her time out to shop for that perfect saree. Jasmine flowers are Nityasree’s style for that matter.

However, she says, “It doesn’t feel complete unless I wear the flowers, sindoor and kumkum.”

So it may mean that those who are not dressed are cannot be in tune with the music season.

“Believe it or not, there are some who can even refuse the silk saree,” says Nityasree.

"It's a very personal choice as far as silk goes I'm environmentally conscious there because I know what happens to the silk-worms. I am not against wearing silks as a fashion-statement or anything like that,” opines Carnatic vocalist, Savitha Narasimhan.

So all the female singers put together could make a fashion parade for the good old sillk saree. But of course not forgetting as how one singer puts it- Sarees matter but only when you have melody in your voice.
