New Delhi: Well, there's no magic elixir or fountain of youth, and scientists still haven't worked out how to defy age, but here's a way to have some control over your maximum life span.
We all intuitively know how stress can age us. You must have noticed that people who are stressed over long periods tend to look haggard.
Says psychologist, Arpita Anand, "Aging is part of life; the body tends to downshift as the decades gather. But chronic stress may speed up the process, and stress management might slow it down."
And it's not just psychological factors - your physical health too determines how long you live.
After the age of 25, we lose 1 per cent per year in aerobic capacity strength speed and other physical attributes. The proportion of the body that is made up of fat doubles between age 25 and age 75.
Smoking accelerates the aging of a person's DNA by about 4.6 years and obesity by nine years. Tobacco smoke contains poisons, which may affect cells at one of the most fundamental levels.
Both smoking and obesity are important risk factors for cancer, cardiovascular disease and Alzheimer's - commonly referred to as diseases of aging and one might not want to believe this but what one eats goes a long way in keep one young energetic and healthy.
Says nutritionist, Ishi Khosla, "One should intake a diet which is rich in valuable anti-oxidants, vitamins and minerals like essential vitamins, folic acids and Vitamin B-12."
There's no magic formula that can reverse the aging process but there are some things you can do to to grow old slowly, gracefully and healthfully. So take advantage of new opportunities that came your way and most importantly, have a positive attitude in life.
