Sindhis issue rules for girls in Bhopal

Bhopal: The High Court may have upheld the marriage of Hindu-Muslim couple- Mohammed Umer and Priyanka Wadhwani. But a happy ending of their love story has sparked yet another trouble.

The Sindhi community's Bhopal panchayat has framed some rules, illogical as it may sound, to check marriages with people of other religions.

So girls can’t talk on cell phones because they can be enticed by Muslim men.

They can't travel on two-wheelers, as that would make them vulnerable. And they can't wear scarves because some of them, the community leaders claim, could be wearing them to hide their identity.

"A lot of girls from the community are being misled by youth of a particular community. This is alarming because the end result in most of these cases has been pain. So we have advised our girls not to wear scarves and carry mobile phones,” says a Sindhi panchayat member, Bhagvan Das Sabani.

The panchayat's decision however, has not gone down too well with the youth in the state capital.

But that cannot stop the panchayat. Members of the panchayat have now joined hands with some Sangh Parivar outfits and formed the Hindu Kanya Suraksha Samiti.

The moral police are also exploring legal options to declare Umar's marriage with Priyanka void.
