Single in a new city? Tips on how to live happy

Lisabelle Gonsalves, Indiwo.com

You have taken an apartment on rent in a new city. You probably have a couple of roomies but for the most part you are on your own! Yes, you have to take care of yourself.

There is no need to fret. Here are 16 tips to help you settle in.

1. Don't undertake any major renovation. You might not be living in the same apartment a couple of years down the line. Simple chataiis (mats) are a trendy way to cover the floors.

2. Opt for cloth wall racks. They store tons of stuff, are easy to clean and can be easily transported when you move.

3. Get multipurpose furniture like a futon that works as a comfy sofa, a recliner as well as a daybed.

4. Don't forget to stack up at least five sets of bed linen (a bed sheet, a pair of pillowcases and a counterpane) and bath linen.

5. Plastic chairs make for great seating. When not in use, these can be stacked up neatly in a corner. You could also have mats and throw cushions that can be rolled away.

6. Don't spend a ton on dry cleaning heavy drapes. Keep out the sun with Venetian blinds. You just need to wipe them once a week.

7. Get yourself a slender, collapsible clothes rack. You can fold it up once your clothes are dry.

8. If you are forgetful, stick up your bills and to-do lists with cute refrigerator magnets. You could also paint one of your cupboard doors with blackboard paint and use it to jot down memos.

9. Hang a key holder in the passageway or near the main door. You can't risk forgetting your keys on your way out.

10. A washing machine will make your chores a lot less. In the long run, it falls cheaper than a laundry service.

11. Cover kitchen platforms and cupboard shelves with newspaper. You could change them as often as required. It is much easier than scrubbing the grime off granite or laminate counters and shelves.

12. Ensure that you have the basic utensils i.e.: a tava (flat pan), saucepan, stainless steel vessels (small, medium and large sizes) and a set of spoons, forks and knives.

13. A water purifier will avoid the hassle of boiling water.

14. A mini fridge is just right for a single person. You can stock it with the basics like milk, eggs, bread and even some leftover junk food.

15. A microwave is a blessing! Make sure you have a set of microwave-safe dishes, plates, mugs, etc.

16. While out shut the windows. Make sure to leave one or two of them an inch open for ventilation. This helps keep the dust out. So all you have to do is vacuum on the weekend.
