Singur (West Bengal): A 65-year-old farmer committed suicide in Singur on Monday after consuming poison.

Hardhan Bag, whose land had been "forcibly" acquired by the West Bengal government to make room for Tata's small car project, was rushed to the hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.

He was an active member of the Krishi Jameen Raksha (Save Farmland) committee and had refused money as compensation for his agricultural land.

Hardhan had earlier gone on a hunger strike to protest the acquisition of agricultural land for setting up industries.

However, police is claiming that Hardhan's death was a fallout of family dispute and it had no link with land acquisition.

Hardhan is survived by wife and two sons.
