Chander Nagar: West Bengal’s Hoogly districit court on Wednesday handed the life term to the two convicts in the Tapasi Mallik murder case.
Tapasi, who was part of the Singur agitation, was found dead in the Tata motors premises.
Nearly 2 years after Tapasi Malik's charred body was recovered from the premises of the former Tata Nano project site in Singur, the victim's family finally got justice.
The two convicts in the murder case, Surhib Dutta and Debu Malik of the CPI(M), were awarded life imprisonment by a Hooghly district court on Wednesday.
Tapasi was the daughter of a Singur farmer and took active part in the agitation against farmland acquisition. She was allegedly raped before she was murdered.
While there was a possibility of the guilty getting death penalties, the court was of the opinion that this wasn`t a rarest of rare crime.
CBI lawyer Partha Tapaswi who is the senior public prosecutor says, the honourable judge actually observed in the order sheet that this is not a rarest of rare case. So, he has given the life imprisonment.”
However, defense counsel Arindam Bhattacharya says, “This is a complete miscarriage of justice and we prefer to appeal before the honourable court for setting aside of this judgement.”
Opposition supporters who had gathered outside the court were jubilant at the verdict.
Tapasi Malik`s father Manoranjan Malik says, “Unless the murderers of my daughter are justly punished, I will not stop fighting.”
Meanwhile, the CPI(M) even alleged that the CBI which took up the case was politically motivated.
The allegation is a yet another setback for the CPI(M) in Singur but yet another shot in the arm for the Trinamool Congress in the eve of the general elections.
Tata Motors has pulled out of Singur, but the political battle here is only getting murkier.
