Male (Maldives): Maldives is suffering from the problem of plenty – water, in their case. The low-lying coral islands’ survival is being threatened because of the rising sea waters.
President of Maldives Mohamed Nasheed said, “We want to settle down soon. We don’t want our future generations to live like environmental refugees.”
The group of islands are the lowest lying nation in the world. In fact, some islands stand at just 1.5 metre above the sea level and there is a clear and present danger of Maldives vanishing from the map of the Earth.
So Nasheed, a former political prisoner who was sworn in last Tuesday as the country's first democratically elected President, has named India and Sri Lanka as possible spots to buy another homeland.
He plans to establish an investment fund with some help from the country's luxury tourism revenues.
“Of course, we have to get to a dry land but the issue is how do we get it. We could either buy land or get the islands higher above the sea level,” Nasheed said.
Climate change reports have repeatedly warned that by the beginning of the next century, the world's most popular honeymoon destination might sink as warming seawater will expand.
