Bharnamganam (Kerala): Ninety-nine-year old Lakshmikutty can’t hear or talk much. But the moment she hears the name Annakutty, her face lights up and memories bubble over.
Annakutty, her best friend, is better known to the rest of the world as the blessed Sister Alphonsa. Lakshmikutty is the only person alive to have spent days with the nun.
“We used to go to the school together and were the best of friends, always spending time with each other in my house. She used to be so gentle. Even if someone tried to pull a trick on her, she would say, we should always forgive in the name of the Lord,” she recalls.
Many others, too, have been touched by the life of the nun, who lived only for 36 years.
Says Father David Puthenkunnathinmel, “She lived only for a few years and with those few years, she has sent a message to the rest of the world.”
Her miracles convinced the Vatican in recognising the saint in Sister Alphonsa, but for the thousands who follow her, Annakutty's life was no less a miracle.
