Six killed in Puri temple stampede

Puri: At least six devotees were killed and 50 injured in a stampede during the annual Jagannath Rath Yatra on Friday.

The incident occurred when pilgrims, trying to make it to the carriage, broke the barricade.

The injured were taken to the Puri Hospital where six were declared dead on arrival.

Chief Minister Naveen Pattnaik visited the hospital and announced Rs 1 lakh compensation for the victims’ kin.

He said an administrative enquiry had been ordered into the incident.
