New Delhi: There is one thing that every one following a 24x7 lifestyle is deprived of and that is sleep.
In the process you lose out not only on your much-required seven to eight of sleep but you might on the other hand gain some weight.
Doctors say that weight gain when sleep deprived is not uncommon. The ones who work for night shifts are more at risk.
“If you don't sleep enough you don't make enough Leptin (a neurotransmitter produced by fat cells and involved in the regulation of appetite) and that can be one of the reasons or the contributing factors to become prone and so the glucose tolerance at night becomes much worse,” nutritionist Ishi Khosla says.
Scientists have worked out the connection between lack of sleep and obesity:
Less than four hours-73 per cent risk.
Five hours of sleep-50 per cent risk.
Six hours of sleep-23 per cent risk.
However, what is important is not how much you sleep but when you sleep. Odd sleeping hours can lead to bad food habits and choices adding to weight gain.
“There is a lot of pressure in working late nights. We feel so hungry that we end up eating high calorie food,” a BPO employee, Dharmender Mehra says.
So if you are not following an organised sleep pattern, here is how you can take stock:
Prioritise your schedule to ensure that you sleep for at least seven hours every day.
To get quality sleep try to sleep and wake up at the same time every day.
Try and have fixed meal times so that your body gets used to a rhythm.
Exercise regularly to oxygenate your blood sufficiently.
