Slow judicial process keeps Dutt in jail despite bail

New Delhi: You thought the computers, e-mail and the Internet have taken over our lives? Well, think again.

At a time when communication can happen in a matter of seconds, the snail's pace of the judiciary's processes and procedures have cost Sanjay Dutt two of his seven days of bail -- because his papers couldn't be delivered on time.

Here is a look at the very complicated procedure. Once the bail is given, the advocate on record -- in this case Sanjay Dutt's lawyer -- is given a certified copy of the order, normally on the same day. But in Dutt's case, it got delayed and the advocate hadn't received it till Tuesday.

The advocate then takes the copy to the local court -- in this case the special TADA court and complete the bail formalities.

For Dutt the conditions are that he not leave the country and report to the CBI every week, after which Judge Kode will sign a release order and forward it to the Yerwada jail authorities in Pune.

The Supreme Court also sends telegraphic messages to the concerned court as well as the jail authorities -- but this is proved counter productive because of widespread forgery and lower courts prefer certified copies.

So, in the age of the Internet and digital signatures, Munnabhai has to lagey raho in jail even after getting his bail.
