London: Slumdog Millionaire yet again emerged as the winner. This time it bagged seven BAFTA awards. The movie was nominated in 11 categories.
Even the steady downpour and freezing temperature in London couldn't dampen the spirits of the Slumdog Millionaire team, which swept the BAFTA awards with as many as seven major wins on Sunday night.
This inspiring coming-of-age drama of a Mumbai slum kid won Best Film, Best Director for Danny Boyle and Best Music for India's very own A R Rahman.
Its other successes included Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Editing, Best Cinematography and also Best Sound for Indian sound designer Resul Pookutty.
Encouraged by the film's winning streak at the Golden Globes and the Screen Actors Guild Awards, the Slumdog team appeared visibly confident about the BAFTA awards even while going into the Royal Opera House.
“Slumdog Millionaire has been nominated for 11 BAFTA awards and we hope to bag all of them,” said actor Anil Kapoor before going for the award ceremony.
“Every score is according to the film and what it does to the film. This film is complete in itself,” says music composer A R Rahman.
The biggest night in the British film calendar, the BAFTA Awards are also the last major awards ceremony before the Oscars.
Acknowledging Slumdog Millionaire’s winning streak this awards season, the film's director Danny Boyle revealed what he plans to do with all the trophies his film has picked up over the last few weeks.
“My assistant Raj has taken one. We want to distribute as many trophies so that everyone associated with the film remembers the film forever,” says director Danny Boyle.
Both Dev Patel and Frieda Pinto, who were nominated for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress respectively, lost out to big Hollywood stars in their categories. But going into the ceremony, it was evident there was little nervousness, more excitement at representing what has emerged one of the year's most favorite films.
“It has been one year now of being together and I guess this experience has changed my life,” says actor Freida Pinto.
“To be here is a big thing,” says actor Dev Patel.
They came and they conquered yet again. Slumdog Millionaire added seven more awards at the BAFTA Awards to its ever increasing kitty.
