The casting director of Slumdog Millionaire, Loveleen Tandon also went on become the co-director and dialogue writer of the film.
Loveleen Tandon's big break as casting director came in 2001 with Mira Nair's Monsoon Wedding. Since then the lady has been credited for international films like The Terminal, Brick Lane and Vanity Fair. But when Loveleen was offered Slumdog Millionaire, she never imagined that she will end up as the co-director of the film as well.
"It was a pleasant surprise. I don't think it could have unfolded in a better way. It was just dropped on me. A few days before we started shooting Danny told me that I need to come on-board as co-director. It was magical and sometimes I still can't believe it," says she.
It was Loveleen who convinced director Danny Boyle to a shoot major portion of the film in Hindi instead of English while pitching in to write the Hindi dialogues as well. But her biggest challenge was to find the child actors, for which she auditioned kids across five cities in India apart from the USA and UK for over eight months.
"It was challenging because the whole story has been structured in such a way. There are three characters, first as kids, then 12-year-olds and then 18-year-olds. So we had to find nine actors playing three parts, who would look alike, feel like same and have the same soul somehow," she says.
So as Slumdog Millionaire gears up for the award season, Loveleen is now ready for her directorial debut and already has few offers in her kitty.
