Slumdog kids receive grand welcome home

Mumbai: The child actors of Slumdog Millionaire returned to Mumbai on Thursday after their great Oscar experience over the weekend. CNN-IBN caught up with little heroes and quizzed them on their new found star status.

From rubbing shoulders with the A listers of Hollywood to being the centre of all attention at the Oscars and now to all the media adulation back home. It sure has been an overwhelming journey for the kids of Slumdog Millionaire.

"Bahut accha laga - yeh first Indian Oscar award hein, (I really liked it. We had fun. This is the first Oscar award for India)," said Ayush Khedekar who played young Jamal in the film.

And the grand welcome that awaited the young Azharuddin Mohammed and Rubina Ali back home in Behrampada, Bandra proved that these kids who played the young Salim and Latika in the film were no less than stars.

Humne bahut majhe kiye, humne swimming kiya, masti kiya, khelne gaye, (It was lots of fun in America. We enjoyed in the swimming pool and we played a lot)," said Azharuddin Mohammed.

"Mujhe bahut accha laga. Aur hum sab jaga gaye aur Danny aur Loveleen bhi aaye, (I enjoyed. We went to a lot of places. And Danny and Loveleen also accompanied us)," said Rubina.

It's going to take some time for the parents of these little stars to digest the dizzying heights their children have just experienced.

"Log bholte hain jaha Amitabh aur Shah Rukh bhi nahi gaya waha Azhar gaya hain, bahut thakdir wala hain, (Stars like Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan have not not been able to get these awards, whereas my son was there. He is very fortunate)," said Azharuddin's mother Shameen Mohammed.

It's been a fairytale ending for the child actors of Slumdog Millionaire especially Azharuddin and Rubina with this grand homecoming. They've become overnight celebrities, it's a day many will never forget.
