SM Krishna to resign as Maharashtra Guv

New Delhi: Confirming months of speculation, Maharashtra governor SM Krishna will resign on Wednesday evening and take charge of Congress in his home state Karnataka.

Krishna will meet President Pratibha Patil in Rashtrapati Bhavan at 1845 hrs (IST) on Wednesday to submit his resignation.

According to reports, the veteran politician is seeking a return to active politics after an apparent green signal from the party High Command.

Sources say Congress President Sonia Gandhi wants him to return to Karnataka at the earliest. Sources also confirm that Krishna will start campaigning in Karnataka for Congress.

Krishna was not active in the state politics since the 2004 Assembly Elections, when the Congress was forced to form coalition with the JD-S to stay in power in a bid to keep the emerging BJP out of Karnataka.

According to political analysts, Krishna's comeback is being viewed as Congress' attempt to revive the party’s fortune in the state and to get an edge over the JD-S.

Krishna’s announcement also holds significance, as it has come months ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, which is scheduled to take place in May 2008.

However, it s still unclear as to what role Krishna will play, or whether he would be projected as Congress’ chief ministerial candidate again.

His return to Karnataka politics is likely to have a huge impact on the state's political scenario. Considering that Banaglore is a booming city in terms of infrastructure, Krishna's urbane image may help Congress in the upcoming elections in May 2008.
