Mumbai: Recently released film A Wednesday has struck a chord with the critics, as well as the masses. Made in a small budget, the film is drawing cinegoers with its take on terrorism and continues to run successfully at multiplexes across the country in it's third week.
Directed by debutante Neeraj Pandey, the film was made at a modest budget of approximately Rs 3 - 4 crore.
The story of the film revolves around a cop who is hot on the heels of an alleged terrorist who threatens to set off a series of blasts across Mumbai.
The film has a climax with a twist which is being highly appreciated by the Indian urban audience.
"The concept of the film is very different. It depicts that a common man at a point can react to a certain situation, which I think the Govt should notice," says a viewer.
Under normal circumstances this small budget film starring Naseeruddin Shan and Anupam Kher would not have drawn the kind of interest and appreciation that it has managed to.
However, at a time when almost every Indian metro has become a terror target, the film manages to effectively express the common man's frustration and inability to fight with the unknown enemy.
It's this frustration which is something the producers believe everyone identifies with.
"For us as a studio, all the factors came together. A very well written story, a good message in a very commercial format," says COO production, UTV Motion Pictures, Alpana Mishra.
A sleeper hit, A Wednesday continues to draw crowds at multiplexes thanks to word of mouth publicity.
Though some critics have raised eye-brows on what could be a stereotyping of minorities in the film's narrative, for the average film goer A Wednesday is much like a cathartic experience in today's terror ridden times.
