Click to play videoMumbai: It's David versus Goliath all over again. A small Marathi film, Me Shivaji Raje Bhosle Boltoy's collections is fast leaving Akshay Kumar starrer 8 by 10 Tasveer behind.
Made with a budget of over Rs 30 crore, 8 by 10 Tasveer released with 1,000 prints worldwide but opened to a dismal 35-40 per cent collections in different multiplex chains like Fame and Fun Cinemas among others.
On the other hand, Mahesh Manjrekar's Me Shivaji Raje Bhosle Boltoy made with just Rs 3 crore and released with a modest 150 prints across Maharashtra and Gujarat is celebrating over 80 per cent collections at multiplexes. In fact, collections at several single screens across the state have touched 100 per cent.
Associate Vice-President Fun Cinemas, Rahul Takalkar says, "The film is really doing well across all our chains."
It's not often that a Marathi film overtakes a big budget Akshay Kumar starrer, but audiences say the film and the story are so good that it should definitely win some awards.
Meanwhile, producer Mahesh Manjrekar - who also plays Maharaja Shivaji in the film - believes it's time Hindi cinema realises that the Marathi film industry is a force to reckon with.
"It's a common man's version and it has hit the audiences. They identify with the character. It's heartening to note that my film is doing much better than Akshay's film in the same multiplex. Marathi films have definitely arrived," he says.
And at the end of the fifth day running, Me Shivaji Raje Bhosle Boltoy has already earned Rs 1.25 crore at the box office, while 8 by 10 Tasveer is yet to reach even the half-way mark. In the meantime, the message for Bollywood is to get its economics right or better yet, learn from its poorer cousin the Marathi film industry.
