Small town India prepares to tackle big terror threat

CNN-IBN

New Delhi: Just as Indians were coming to terms with the blast at the Dargah in Ajmer, the country, within three days, was jolted by a second blast at a cinema hall in Ludhiana.

And that was enough to send alarm bells ringing and putting a question mark on the safety of smaller towns.

Says Home Secretary, Madhukar Gupta, "In the areas where there is a bit of vulnerability, the police and security agencies will have to make some preparations to deal with terror."

Security in the Capital has been stepped up and vigil at all sensitive locations have been increased. But what about the smaller towns?

Intelligence agencies have confirmed that with Durga Puja and Dusshehra just around the corner, terrorists can target any city, even smaller ones and so, malls in cities like Bhopal could also be on the terror map.

Says Manager Sargam Talkies, Rajesh, "The police assists us during show times but after the Ludhiana blasts, we have now decided to spruce up our security and employ private guards post-Diwali."

Down south, smaller towns like Vizag and Kochi also sense the need to be prepared.

However, cinema halls and commercial complexes in these places are yet to take measures to counter a potential terror attack.

Says President of Pioneer Tower Complex in Kochi, George Parayankal, "Right now we haven't take any precaution. In the future though, we plan to tighten the security. The only problem is, in a shopping complex, we cannot check all the people, it is not possible."

But with the recent blasts, the message is loud and clear for every city, every town, be prepared and be alert.
