Berlin: In Germany, a driving teacher is taking global warming warnings very seriously and he says driving intelligently can do a lot for the environment.
Our love affair with the car – one way, scientists say, that we are contributing to global warmings.
The bigger they are, and the older they are, the more carbon dioxide they blow into the air.
Werner Sudhoff operates an eco driving school. He says drivers can save up to 30 per cent fuel simply by changing their driving habits.
Up to 50 liters per 100 kilometers – nothing guzzles more gas than stop and go inner city traffic. But that's also where the highest potential for saving fuel lies, says Sudhoff.
"You have to drive the car in high gears even at low speeds," he says.
The idea is to have your foot on the gas as little as possible and use the car's momentum efficiently. Carbon emissions from vehicles are a growing problem.
Environmental Activist Werner Reh says, "While we are seeing declining carbon emissions in other industries, carbon emissions from passenger cars have increased by about 15 per cent over the past ten years."
Werner Sudhoff also advises his driving students to increase tire pressure a little over what the manufacturer recommends.
He agrees his tips won't solve the environmental problems caused by cars, but says even old gas-guzzlers like my station wagon can be more efficient if they are driven intelligently.
