Omar Abduallah wants polls postponed

New Delhi: National Conference President Omar Abdullah has demanded that elections in the state should be postponed, because of the heavy snowfall in the area.

"National Conference has already given a draft to the Election Commission to review the situation. The weather makes it virtually imposible to get any voter turnout in the first phase of elections," he said.

The Election Commission has announced that the polls will be held between November 17 and December 24 in the state. The polling will be divided into a mammoth seven phases.

The elections will be held on: November 17, 23 and 30 and December 7, 13, 17 and 24. The votes will be counted on December 28.

Security was one of the biggest concerns for the EC before it decided on the poll dates. The Commission was also apprehensive that the state had not yet recovered from the Amarnath land row.

Among other concerns were weather issues which could play spoiler in the election process, with winter setting early in the state. Also, bad weather could end up low voter turnout.

One of the major impediments in holding elections in the state has been sorted out with Bihar and Uttar Pradesh promising to provide 4,000 Urdu-speaking government officials required for the polling process.
