IIM fee puts Govt in a bind

New Delhi: Union Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh decided to not interfere when IIM-Ahemedabad decided to hike its fee by almost 175 per cent [font color=red>Read story on new IIM fee structure], but days later, a report commissioned by the Government on top management institutes has put the ministry in a Catch-22 situation.

Earlier, the Ministry had drafted a bill to regulate the function of the IIMs through an act of Parliament.

The bill was shelved but the Government persisted with the idea of constituting Bhargava Committee to review functioning of the IIMs.

The committee - headed by former MD of the Maruti Udyog, R C Bhargava - has now given its interim report, categorically asking all IIMs to defer any fee hike for the moment.

It has also asked the institutes to keep the fee below Rs 3 lakh per annum for the PG courses till the final report is submitted.

However, three of the six IIMs propose to fix their fees well beyond the stipulated mark set by the committee.

In a bind, the Government has decided to forward the report to the IIMs and is awaiting their response.
