New Delhi: In Spain, the ruling Socialist Party has won the elections and Prime Minister Jose Luis Zapatero is likely to get another term.
However, the socialists are once again short of an absolute majority.
With 96 per cent of votes counted, the Socialists were projected to win 169 seats in the 350-seat Lower House.
The conservative Popular Party (PP) won 153 seats, also up five from 2004. Vote turnout was high, at 75 per cent.
The economic slowdown and a sharp rise in unemployment dominated the election campaign until Friday, when a former Socialist councilor was shot at point-blank range in the Basque Country. The assassination has been blamed on ETA rebels.
Zapatero’s first term was characterised with liberal and progressive policies such as legalising gay marriage and making it easier for couples to divorce.
