Mumbai: Socialite Sheetal Mafatlal is likely to move to the court on Tuesday for bail.
She is in judicial custody until June 12 for allegedly underdeclaring the value of diamonds and jewellery worth Rs 53 lakh that she was carrying when she landed at Mumbai International airport on Sunday morning from London on a British Airways flight.
Meanwhile, Mafatlal’s family says there is vendetta behind the arrest.
The Airport Intelligence Unit acting on a tip-off detained her for allegedly possessing the undeclared valuables. Mafatlal had reportedly declared they were worth only Rs 20 lakh
Sheetal Mafatlal's Lawyer Satish Manshinde said, “Sheetal Mafatlal is under the custody of customs for 2 days. This is a total vendetta against her. This could be conspiracy against her.”
Meanwhile, Sheetal's husband Atulya Mafatlal said, “My wife is at the airport for not declaring her jewellery, which is not true. Her jewellery is worth Rs 51 lakhs. She frequently travels abroad.”
The Mafatlals have been fighting over their property for years. Atulya and Sheetal on one side and Atulya's brother Ajay and mother Madhuri on the other. Atulya had practically accused his mother of misappropriating funds, alleging jewellery worth Rs 10 crore was missing.
Reports also say that Ajay is actually Aparna, Atulya's sister who underwent a sex change operation allegedly to claim her right to the family property.
Since the jewellery is worth less than Rs 1 crore and duty less than Rs 30 lakh, according to section 135 of the Customs Act, the Mafatlals can file for bail. Sheetal's bail application will be heard on Tuesday.
