New Delhi: Just days before Gujarat goes to polls, Chief Minister Narendra Modi has started playing the communal card again. At a rally in Mangrol in South Gujarat, he has justified the killing of Sohrabuddin Sheikh in an encounter for which some senior police officials are facing trial. He said that Sohrab deserved to die, however, the comment has sparked off outrage and a legal debate.
It seems that the Chief Minister is back to his Hindutva poster boy mode to score political points. In a campaign speech in Mangrol, South Gujarat, Modi mentioned the Sohrabuddin Sheikh encounter case, keeping in mind the polarised electorate in the state.
"Congress is saying that Modi got the encounter done. I'm telling the Congress, you have a Government at the Centre. If u have the guts, come and hang me. Sohrabuddin is the one who attacked the police with AK47s on our soil. Then what does the Gujarat Police do?,” asks Modi.
The Citizen for Justice and Peace, an NGO spearheaded by Teesta Setalvad fighting the Gujarat riots case, has shot off a detailed letter. She says the speech amounts to exhortation to violence against a particular community. She adds that it is an equation of a particular community with criminals.
In Surat, where all three Election Commissioners met, the CEC has denied having received any letter. There is a paper that’s come to the District Magistrate. He will send us the report after looking into it,” says N Gopalswamy, Election Commissioner.
