New Delhi: The Supreme Court has reserved its order on whether there should be a CBI inquiry into Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case or not till Thursday.
Gujarat Government told SC that investigation in the fake encounter case is in its final stages. It will take them 4 to 6 weeks time to complete the investigations. The state CID in a status report made some startling revelations in the case on Tuesday.
A Gujarat Police driver confessed to involvement in Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case. The Gujarat CID says it has confessional statement of one of the cops. A Gujarat police driver confessed to have witnessed Sohrabuddin's killing, however no IPS officer has admitted to fake encounter –that's what the Gujarat government is telling the Supreme Court
According to sources, in an Action Taken Report (ATR) submitted to the Apex Court on Monday, IGP Geeta Johri, who is heading the probe, said that the arrested police officer had confessed to his involvement in the crime in a statement recorded under Section 164 CrPc.
However, it was not known whether the confession was made by one of the three arrested IPS officers or their juniors who were subsequently arrested.
Sources have told CNN-IBN that a CID status report on the investigation, submitted to the court on Monday, speaks of a policeman in Vanzara's team admitting that he had witnessed Sohrabuddin's murder, and confirming the involvement of the six arrested IPS officers.
The status report says phone records also confirm the involvement of the officers. It says more arrests are likely in the case.
The government also says it is investigating the possibility of the involvement of Andhra Pradesh police officers, and seeks more time to wrap up the probe. The report says that the transfer of IG Geeta Johri from the case was a routine matter - because by law, the officer who conducts the initial inquiry is not supposed to carry the investigation forward.

Sources say the state CID and the Gujarat government have decided to oppose a CBI inquiry into the matter. With the issue becoming more political, both the UPA and the BJP will be watching the Supreme Court closely on Tuesday.
