Jammu: A soldier was killed while foiling an infiltration bid by a group of militants from Pakistan in the Poonch sector of Jammu and Kashmir, army officials said on Monday.

Mohinder Singh of 8 Kumaon fell to a bullet fired from across the Line of Control (LoC) late on Sunday, while another soldier had a narrow escape.

Army officials told IANS that a group of militants tried to sneak into the Indian side and may have been given covering fire by the Pakistani army.

The Indian Army was assessing the situation and preparing the details to be communicated to the Pakistani side.

"In case the firing was from the Pakistani army then it can be termed as ceasefire violation," said an official.

If that be the case then it would be the third case of ceasefire violation by Pakistan in this sector this year.

Defence Minister AK Antony had last year stated that Pakistan had violated the ceasefire over 30 times since it was agreed between India and Pakistan in November 2003.
