Somali pirates paid $3 mn for releasing ship

Nairobi: The ordeal of 25 sailors on board the Sirius Star, a Saudi super-tanker - taken hostage by Somalian pirates - might finally be over. The tanker was held off the coast of Somalia.

Witnesses say pirates were counting on the ransom money, which has now been delivered, and the sailors are expected to head home soon. The money was parachuted to them on the deck of a captured super-tanker.

While experts say that every ship released is good news for the shipping industry, many say that this does not help as giving into ransom demands might make pirates go after more ships.

Last year saw a record number of ships taken off the coast of Somalia. The Sirius Star was taken off the coast of Kenya and then spirited away to Somalia.

The US Navy has said that though the release of the Sirius Star was a good development, but it also gave a reminder that over 300 sailors were still held hostage on the Somalian coast.
