Chennai: M K Stalin, son of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, was elected the Dravida Munnettra Kazhagam (DMK)'s Treasurer on Saturday.
Stalin’s election as the party’s treasurer of the DMK is yet another reassertion that he is the heir of his father’s throne.
Stalin’s brother M K Azhagiri emerged as a power center after the party came to power in 2006 and his influence has been growing since then and perhaps that is why Stalin needed reassertion. And making way for the son's elevation is what one of Karunanidhi's closest political aides and the party's outgoing treasurer Arcot N Veerasamy has been doing.
“Arcot N Veerasamy took the post from me and is now returning it to Stalin,” says Karunanidhi.
But as the party makes way for Karunanidhi’s son, the other sons and daughters in the family are demanding their pound of flesh.
The focus of discussions now are positions for Karunanidhi's elder son Azhagiri, daughter Kanimozhi and Dayanidhi Marn who patched up with the DMK patriarch after a year long family battle.
“If we don’t control terrorism and extremism then the nation’s future will be question,” says Stalin.
And, as the DMK's first family fights for power in the party, their arch rival Jayalalithaa is getting ready for the General Election. She has just firmed up an alliance with the Left and now she is dealing with the other smaller parties like Deve Gowda's JD(S). She is confident that it's not the family but a family of allies that can help her win an election.
