Sonia effect: Mumbai cops' riot role probed

New Delhi: The Maharashtra government has asked Mumbai’s Police Commissioner to investigate whether there were lapses in handling the 1992-1993 riots cases, Chief Minister Vilas Rao Deshmukh has said.

Deshmukh told CNN-IBN that two days ago he gave Congress President Sonia Gandhi a status report on what action had been taken on Justice B N Srikrishna commission’s findings on the riots.

Gandhi on Wednesday asked Deshmukh to report what action it had taken on the commission’s reports. Pressure on the state government to revive the report has increase after the sentencing in the 1993 serial blasts case.

The Congress-NCP alliance promised to act on the findings when it first came to power in 1999 but has ignored the document since then.

The report indicts 31 policemen and Shiv Sena members for the riots in which more than 900 people were killed.

The Supreme Court last week asked the state government to file a detailed report on what steps it had taken on report.

Shiv Sena dares government

The Shiv Sena on Wednesday said the Srikrishna report was “one-sided” and implementing would amount to "hanging Hindus".

"If the underlying objective (of this demand) is to target Shiv Sena, we know how to deal with such things. There would be repercussions across the state..," Sena's Rajya Sabha MP and editor of party mouthpiece "Saamna" Sanjay Raut told PTI.
