New Delhi: UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi filed her nomination on Monday from Rae Bareli with the usual fanfare and the razmatazz surrounding the Gandhi family.
In less that five years since the opposition BJP as well as AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa was gunning for her non-Indian origins, Sonia Gandhi is completely off the BJP radar.
In 2005, Uma Bharti, then the Madhya Pradesh chief minister and the face of Hindutva had questioned Sonia’s ability to understand the importance of the Indian tricolour as she was an Italian by birth.
Sonia’s inability to read and speak Hindi was repeatedly pointed out, as was her lack of confidence at public interactions.
But having led the UPA to successfully complete five years in power, and with a string of assembly wins just a few months ago, a visibly more relaxed Sonia Gandhi filed her second nomination on Monday, waving to the crowds of party workers. She was seen going for a puja before filing her papers.
But Sonia will need some serious divine intervention to make gains in Uttar Pradesh where the picture has not been rosy at all for the Congress for several years now, especially with the alliance with the SP not working out.
Some things have changed dramatically, though.NCP chief, Sharad Pawar, the man who left the Congress on the foreign origin issue is part of her government. Jayalalithaa, the woman who said she'll never let Sonia be the prime minister made overtures to before being rejected.
