Anxiety on the faces of the immediate family - sister and brother-in-law of Dutt are preparing for a supreme legal battle before the apex court. The legal consultations are low-key. But the determination is showing.
Priya Dutt said, “As Sanjay’s sister and as his family, our main focus today is to see that what we can do to get him relief.“
So the bail is what the family is looking for just now. And not just the family, the Congress parivar and the party's first family have all rallied around the Dutt.
On Friday morning, none other than Sonia Gandhi convened a high powered meeting at 10 Janpath. The Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil and his MoS, Sriprakash Jaiswal were summoned.
Science and Technology Minister Kapil Sibal said, “Sunil Dutt epitomised the principles of the Congress, his daughter is a Congress MP and we must extend support to Sanjay Dutt.”
Experts believe that Dutt has several legal options.
Supreme Court Advocate K T S Tulsi said, “For which he would have been guilty for the offence for possession of weapon under Section 5 of TADA, he is now using the same reasons for denying the benefit.”
But it’s the Congress support, which should boost the morale of Priya Dutt.
Sanjay Dutt resurrected Gandhi, so Munnabhai becomes an emotive issue for the Congress but that apart it is also an opportunity for it to repay its debts to Sunil Dutt.
