New York: The Forbes list of the world's most powerful people is out and Congress President Sonia Gandhi has been ranked as the third most influential woman in the world. She is 21st on the overall list.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff were the only women who were ahead of her. In a separate list of the world's 100 most powerful women, Forbes ranked Gandhi in the ninth position. "As president of the Indian National Congress, Gandhi heads the ruling political party of the world's second largest population," read her brief profile on the Forbes website.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is on the 28th position while Industrialist Mukesh Ambani features at the 38th position in the list.
But the world's most powerful person according to the Forbes Magazine is Russian President Vladimir Putin. Putin toppled US President Barack Obama this year and has made it to the top spot for the first time.
According to the annual list published by the magazine, Putin has overtaken Obama because of Russia's role in the Syria conflict this summer.
Pope Francis also made it to the list at number four. German Chancellor Angela Merkel, at number 5, is the only woman in the top 10.
This year's list features 17 heads of state who run countries with a combined GDP of $ 48 trillion and 27 CEOs and business leaders who control over $ 3 trillion in annual revenues.
