Austere UPA: Sonia to fly economy to Mumbai

CNN-IBN

New Delhi: Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Monday flew economy class to Mumbai in a commercial airliner, joining a battery of ministers in an effort by the Government to enforce austerity measures.

Two rows of seats were booked for Sonia Gandhi and her security personnel in the aircraft as she left here for Mumbai to launch the Congress campaign for the Octoober 13 Assembly elections in Maharashtra, official sources said.

The Congress President usually takes a special aircraft of the Indian Air Force in view of security concerns.

Sonia Gandhi has also suspended her Iftaar party as a symbolic gesture in view of the drought situation in the country and economic recession.

Her austerity drive coincides with the home ministry reviewing security to VIPs. The security of 51 ministers and VIPs has already been scaled down.

The question, however is, how much money is Sonia Gandhi actually saving by travelling economy?

SONIA AND SAVINGS

Money Spent Travelling Business Class

  • If Sonia Gandhi flies Business Class, the seat next to her is kept empty for security reasons
  • Her security officers book two rows in economy class, which is six seats
  • That is approximately Rs 20,000 for a business class seat and Rs 3,700 for one economy seat
  • The total amounts to Rs 63,000

Money Spent Travelling Economy

  • If Sonia Gandhi flies Economy Class, the first five rows reserved for her and her entourage, that is 15 seats
  • Total: Rs 55,500 (if one ticket costs Rs 3,700)

In all, the Congress leader saves a mere Rs 10,000.
