New Delhi: After the defeat in Gujarat and Himachal, Congress is preparing for the next big elections - the Lok Sabha polls as well as elections in crucial states like Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh.
Party president Soia Gandhi seems all set to shuffle her pack and has begun by appointing state party presidents.
Senior ministers Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi, Suresh Pachauri and Saifuddin Soz have been appointed the state presidents of West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir respectively.
The focus for Sonia and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh seems to be accountability and responsibility. But sources say it finally took a strong dose of party discipline to steer the three ministers towards their home states.
Rajiv Gandhi has also tried this formula once by incorporating ministers into the organisation. It didn't work then and there are doubts if it will work now.
Congress leader Rajiv Shukla speculates. “It helps to have senior ministers but if three ministers give up few of their portfolios, it means that a cabinet reshuffle is not far behind,” he says.
Following are some of the likely changes:
- Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi is likely to lose Parliamentary Affairs Ministry.
- Young faces like Jyotiraditya Scindia and Sachin Pilot will be inducted.
- A Dalit face may be inducted to fight the Mayawari factor and another Muslim face may be picked to replace Soz.
The message in the impending reshuffle is clear: more than the Government's efficiency, it's political signals that need to be sent out.
