New Delhi: The vulnerability was showing, but unlike the BJP, the Congress had not succumbed to indiscipline.
Sonia Gandhi and her team in CWC had long managed to enforce discipline — at least till the Ram Setu controversy came along, and then it was a free-for-all.
Culture Minister Ambika Soni has been the punching bag for Congressmen claiming to be more politically astute.
On Monday morning, senior partyman, R K Dhawan joined the Soni-bashers' league.
RK Dhawan, "I think that she should have given in her resignation to the Prime Minister or to Congress President Sonia Gandhi."
Ambika Soni has heard the quit advice quite unexpectedly from her party colleagues. She has been insisting that she will put in her papers if told to do so by either Sonia Gandhi or the Prime Minister.
For Sonia Gandhi, re-enforcing discipline wasn't easy. It's difficult to reprimand those who are reprimanding Ambika Soni's archaeologists — after all they had buried Ram in mythology.
At the same time, these public spats give out the impression that Sonia Gandhi is not in control. So, efforts are on give the controversy a quiet burial.
Says Congress spokesperson, Abhishek Manu Singhvi, "The stand of the Government is clear and therefore there will be no occasions to speak about these issues."
Just when Sonia Gandhi was being complimented for turning the tables on the BJP by reacting promptly in the Ram Setu controversy, this public spat has come as a huge embarrassment for her. After all, for Sonia, party discipline is a priority.
