Jaipur: Rajasthan Congress Legislative Party (CLP) failed to elect its leader on Thursday due to the demands from rival factions and authorised party President Sonia Gandhi to nominate the chief minister.

All India Congress Committee observers including General Secretary Digvijay Singh will consult all the Members of Legislative Assembly individually before deciding on the chief minister.

A resolution proposed by CLP leader in the outgoing Assembly Hema Ram Choudhry and seconded by Dipender Singh Shekhawat and Paramjit Navdeep to this effect was adopted at the meeting in Jaipur.

Soon after the resolution was adopted, Singh started meeting MLAs individually to seek their views on the leadership issue.

Another resolution adopted at the meeting thanked Sonia, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Rahul Gandhi for their contribution to the party's success in the Assembly elections in which the party got 96 seats in the 200-member House.

Earlier, it was expected that senior Congress leader Ashok Gehlot would be chosen as the CLP leader and will become the next chief minister of the state.

However, the powerful Jat lobby supporting Sheesh Ram Ola is not keen on Gehlot becoming the chief minister.

Ola and Gehlot supporters also clashed outside the hotel in Jaipur where Congress observers are staying. The Jat leader is likely to be named as the deputy chief minister.
