Mumbai: Bollywood playback singer Sonu Nigam got back recently from what he calls 'a journey of self-discovery’ from the Himalayas and is in a spiritual mood.
The singer is lending his voice for Dharm, a film that explores religious harmony.
"It was a refreshing change. I had forgotten that I have sung songs like Ishq Kamina, Kal ho na ho and what is mobile number. And now the same man is singing classical numbers for this beautiful movie," Sonu says.
The film is about a Hindu priest who comes under fire from Hindu fanatics after adopting a Muslim child, has been directed by debutant Bhavna Talwar.
Actor couples Pankaj Kapur and Supriya Pathak are part of this venture.
Bhavna attributes the core idea of the film to the instances of communal violence she has heard and read about around her.
"This film is a very humble prayer that better sense prevail," Bhavna says.
Music director Debajyoti Mishra, who has films like Raincoat and Chokher Bali to his credit, has composed the film's score, and the entire team can't stop praising each other.
"After ages, this film's music is pure music," Bhavna says.
As for Sonu, he continues to be the poster boy for Bollywood playback music and the music director agrees.
"He is an excellent performer. Sonu is a revelation today," Debajyoti says.
The spiritual journey will begin in September, when Dharm opens at cinemas. The makers of film are confident that the audience will wake up to the sounds pure melody when their soundtrack releases in stores shortly.
