Lucknow: There seems to be no end to the nightmares of Arunima Sinha alias Sonu Sinha, the volleyball player who was allegedly thrown out of a train by a gang of robbers and lost her left leg.
Sonu had to undergo a second surgery at Lucknow's Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Medical University (CSMMU) on Sunday following infection in her amputated left leg. It is still unclear what caused the infection in her amputated leg.
She will be shifted to Delhi's All India Institute of Medical Sciences for further treatment.
Sonu was shifted from the Bareilly District Hospital on Saturday after developing complications. Her condition continues to be serious but stable. She also has several multiple fractures on her right leg.
Uttar Pradesh Sports Minister Ayodhya Prasad Pal said that the state government will offer Sonu a job
"Her condition has improved. The Chief Minister (Mayawati) has offered aid. We have assured her a job wherever she wants one," said Pal.
Dr Vineet Sharma, the doctor treating Sonu in Lucknow, said that she would have to undergo more surgeries.
"The infection in such a serious case is usually not contained in one operation. In there is no saying that more won't be needed. So there was no botching up on the part of Bareilly doctors. The priority was to save the patient. The good news is that she is stable and her knee may be saved," said Dr Sharma.
She has also been offered a job in the Indian Railways and full rehabilitation. "Railway will be bearing the complete medical expenditure," said Railway Board Chairman Vivek Sahai.
The Sports Ministry, which initially offered her a compensation of Rs 25,000, topped it with Rs 2 lakh medical insurance.
The 23-year-old athlete was coming to Noida from Faizabad on Padmavat Express for attending a Central Industrial Security Force recruitment drive on April 4.
The incident happened when she tried to resist an attempt of robbery inside the train. The robbers threw her off the moving train. As she fell on to the tracks, she was hit by another train. Her left leg below the knee was crushed and she lay bleeding on the tracks for six to seven hours. She was found later by the railway police.
