Srinagar: Padam Shri awardee Bhajan Sopori and his son Abhay Rustum Sopori are setting up a music school in Srinagar and composing the song Khushal Kashmir (a new Kashmir).
Abhay Rustum Sopori is heir to his father's Sufiana tradition. The duo have returned to their home in Kashmir and have started their music academy, hoping that some day the sound of guns and bombs will be replaced by the notes of santoor.
"I'm sure music will have an influence. The effect it has, the ambience it creates, the overall atmosphere is very soothing to the mind, to the ears. Definitely, it has an effect on people. I have seen instances where people have really changed," says musician, Abhay Rustum Sopori.
Pt Bhajan Sopori has helped in evolving the Santoor vastly. The same spirit reflects in the Soporis' new initiative.
The Soporis want their academy to help aspiring musicians in the valley.
"We are talking about Kashmir with ecstasy. I don't second the thought that Kashmir is all about violence; it is the best peace-loving state that we have. The interaction is great," says Abhay.
The Soporis have recently come up with an appeal song, Aao Kadam Badhayain for raising donations for the Kashmir earthquake victims.
