Ranchi: Jharkhand Chief Minister Madhu Koda finally resigned on Saturday paving the way for Shibu Soren.
However, it's not going to be easy for the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) chief as the Congress and RJD are reluctant to be drawn into the number crunching game.
With five independent MLAs refusing to support Soren's claim to be the next CM, his prospects of making it to the CM's post seem to be bleak.
“I have made many CM's in the past, now is my time to be the CM,” says Shibu Soren.
However, his hopes of becoming the CM of Jharkhand could be dashed yet again as the independent MLAs, who hold the key to formation of any government in Jharkhand, have made it clear that although Soren may have fought a war for the creation of the state, but he is not acceptable to them as the Chief Minister.
“We all are of the opinion that we don’t want a change in leadership,” says deputy chief minister Stephen Marandi.
In the 80-member Jharkhand Assembly, JMM has 17 MLAs and will have to muster the support of Congress, which has nine MLAs, RJD which has seven members and eight independents to reach the half way mark of 41.
Meanwhile, what's keeping the centre on tenterhooks is Shibu's threat of withdrawing support from the UPA government at the centre.
However, although Shibu claims that he will muster the requisite numbers, he and his crisis managers know that it will not be cakewalk for him.
Nevertheless, the ball is now entirely in the Center's court. UPA will have to take a political call and decide whether it wants governor Syed Sibtey Razi, to continue with an Assembly in suspended animation, to explore possibility of a Government formation in the future or dissolve the house.
