Soumya murder: No headway, many questions

New Delhi: A day after television journalist Soumya Viswanathan was found shot dead in her car, there are still no concrete leads available in the case.

More than 36 hours after the incident, police are clueless about how Soumya was murdered. They say that it could be .315 bore country-made pistol that could have been used to shoot at her but are unsure how the tyre got punctured.

But initial investigations have thrown up several questions.

Eyewitness accounts say the car was seen wobbling and hitting the divider at least two to three times before coming to a halt, so was the shot fired before or after the car came to a halt?

Police suspect there might be a bullet mark on the number plate too. So how many bullets were fired in all?

Was there someone inside the car who shot her, or did the assailant fire the shot from outside?

Considering the right window of the car was shattered, tufts of hair were found in the backseat, could there have been a scuffle?

What range was the shot was fired from, considering the bullet found in her skull entered from the back of her head?

Eyewitnesses only heard a loud bang and saw the car hitting the divider. So when did the culprits flee and what vehicle they were travelling in?

Meanwhile, Soumya’s colleague remember her as a warm person. “We must look into all possibilities. She was a very nice person had no problems with anyone. We should get to the bottom of this,” says Editor-in-Chief Headlines Today Rahul Kanwal says.

Police officials are still struggling to put together pieces of this bizarre murder mystery. Perhaps it’s only the result of forensic tests that can make the picture look clearer.
