Sound of music silenced in Mumbai cars

Mumbai: A new rule by the Mumbai traffic police says people cannot listen to music while driving.

However, many people like Karan Tacker, a model and businessman, spend a lot of his time driving through the busy roads of Mumbai.

Karan likes to listen to music while he drives and his best companion is the FM radio, which is why he's fuming at the Mumbai traffic police's new order against listening to music while driving.

“Music is a huge stress buster. The new rule is a ridiculous thing. What am I supposed to do for all those hours spent on the road,” asks Karan.

Many other Mumbaikars are equally angry. They say the order infringes on their favorite stress buster and time pass.

Many people say that only loud music should be fined. Meanwhile, they are some who say that listening to music calms them while driving in heavy traffic.

However, there are others who agree with the police.

“I had an accident just because of I was listening to music and was caught unaware,” says a supporter of the new rule.

However, following the outcry from angry motorists and radio stations, the traffic police have backtracked and issued a clarification.

“We know it's the lifeline. It is an order only for people who play loud music and not for all people playing the radio. We have been routinely fining people for loud music,” says DCP Traffic, Harish Baijal.
