New Delhi: The new Chief Officiating Officer of the new South Asia University, Prof G K Chaddha is facing opposition on his appointment.
Although a regional project, the university has not been able to escape the politics and controversy common to Indian academic institutions.
Critics point out that Professor Chaddha has no business heading this university given that he has other assignments to fulfil. He is on the Prime Minister's Economic Advisory Council and also heads UGC Pay Review Committee that has met only once.
“He should set his priorities right,” says Gen Secretary, FCUTA, Tabrez Alam.
In fact the university teachers are already planning a nationwide strike over pay once the academic session begins in July.
Prof Chadda's critics also say the target date of July 2009 for the university to become operational is unrealistic.
It's not just the tardy pace at which such large projects move in India. Critics say Prof Chadda has far too much on his hands to be able to justify his chairmanship of the SAARC University.
