Chennai: The annual Vijay TV Awards were presented at a ceremony over the weekend. While the usual suspects picked up the big awards, a rare appearance by actor Jyothika and an emotional speech by Kamal Haasan made it a not-so-usual affair.

The who's who of southern film industry got together to honour best in the business with Annual Vijay TV Awards at Chennai's Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium on Saturday evening.

Multi-faceted star, Kamal Haasan who was accompanied by partner Gautami and children, Shruti and Akshara, was named the Favourite Hero Award. And he got all misty eyed as he recalled his favourite hero - the legendary comedian Nagesh.

"This gentleman introduces me to Nagesh and he used to tell me how Nagesh used to perform a certain scene," Haasan said during his speech.

Meanwhile, Nayantara picked up the Favorite Heroine Award.

Actor Jyothika made a rare public appearance to cheer Suriya who bagged the Best Male Actor Award for his performance in Varanam Aayiram. The Best Actress Award went to Sneha for her act in Pirivom Sandippom.

Another big winner of the evening was Superstar Rajinikanth's son-in-law actor Dhanush who won the Entertainer of the Year honour. And not many were surprised when A R Rahman was pronounced the winner of Chevalier Sivaji Ganesan Award. But the maestro was not present for the ceremony.

"I'm very proud and honoured to receive the award," said Rahman.

The night rounded off with some dazzling performances by the industry's hottest including Leslie Lewis and Hariharan.
