New Delhi: The Jamia Nagar encounter in the Capital is fast acquiring political overtones. In an attempt to hold on to its minority vote base, the Samajwadi Party is demanding a judicial probe into the shootout.
The party has even threatened to withdraw support to the UPA if those arrested after the blasts are found innocent. Two suspected Indian Mujahideen terrorists were killed on September 19 in the gunbattle.
The Samajwadi Party had voted in favour of the UPA during the vote of confidence on the Indo-US nuclear deal in Parliament and its support is crucial for the survival of the Government.
An SP delegation led by Amar Singh visited Jamia Nagar on Sunday. Singh said he would suggest Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil to "resign on moral grounds" till the judicial inquiry is over.
"Our party supported the Government due to pressure from the minorities to keep the BJP at bay. If the judicial probe proves that those arrested in connection with the serial blasts are innocent, then we will have to rethink on the support (to the UPA)," Singh told a news agency.
His comments came after his visit to Batla House where the encounter took place in which Delhi police official Mohan Chand Sharma also died.
Five suspected Indian Mujahideen terrorists were arrested by Delhi Police on September 19 and 21.
Five near simultaneous blasts had rocked the Capital on September 13, killing 25 people and leaving about 100 injured.
Police have claimed that a 13-member module of the Indian Mujahideen was behind the blasts in the Capital and those in Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Gorakhpur and Varanasi.
