New Delhi: Going up is easy, it's coming back that's tough, especially if you want to survive the trip. But India bought a ticket to an elite club of nations that can bring objects from space on Monday.
The Space Capsule Recovery Experiment, or Spacecap, crash-landed in the Indian Ocean a little after 0930 hrs (IST).
Launched on January 10 on the PSLV, the Spacecap conducted micro-gravity experiments.
To bring it back ISRO scientists had to get the Spacecap to change its orbit and then set off on the long, and very hot journey back using its onboard motors.
Indigenously developed heat tiles made sure the satellite didn't burn up on the way back in. The tiles are very hard to develop and the technology is possessed by only six nations in the world.
Plus, the heat tiles are better than those possessed by everybody else, say ISRO scientists.
With Monday's success, ISRO takes another step towards someday sending a man, or woman, into space, and bringing them alive.
