New Delhi: Eight months of a bitter and often divisive campaign to win the nomination for president ended on on Friday when, with more than 70,000 flag waving supporters cheering him on, Barack Obama vowed to restore America's standing in the world and to reverse its economic collapse.

"With profound gratitude and great humility, I accept your nomination for presidency of the United States. America, we cannot turn back. Not with so much work to be done. Not with so many children to educate, and so many veterans to care for. Not with an economy to fix and cities to rebuild and farms to save. Not with so many families to protect and so many lives to mend. America, we cannot turn back. We cannot walk alone. At this moment, in this election, we must pledge once more to march into the future," he said in an echo of Martin Luther King's 'I have a dream' speech.

Then Obama slammed into the man he will run against in a little over two months from now.

"John McCain has voted with George Bush 90 per cent of the time. John McCain stands alone in his stubborn refusal to end a misguided war. That's not the judgement we need. That won't keep America safe. We need a president who can face the threats of the future, not keep grasping at the ideas of the past," he said.

And the people thought that he was awesome. Some said he has said everything that needs to be said and that he had their vote, and others said that he hit the issues that needed to be hit and that he was the one who would bring America out of disrepair.

A Gallup poll immediately after the convention showed a six point surge in Obama's lead over McCain.

The big question now is whether Obama can maintain and build on the lead until polling day on November 4.
