Srinagar: Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru's family on Monday received the speed post from Tihar jail informing them about his hanging. The letter reached Afzal Guru's family at 11 am on Monday.
Earlier on Sunday, Afzal Guru's family had claimed that they were not informed about his hanging and came to know only through television news. This came even as the Centre had said on Saturday that Afzal Guru's family was informed through speed post.
"They (Tihar jail authorities) intimated the family through Speed Post, registered post and the DG (Director General of Jammu and Kashmir Police) has been told to check with the family whether they got it or not," Union Home Secretary RK Singh had said on Saturday. Singh said the J&K government has been taken into confidence before Guru's hanging early on Saturday.
CNN-IBN had learnt that the speed post was sent on February 6 with the information that the hanging would be carried out on February 8. The government said that Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister, chief secretary and DGP were kept in the loop, however, Omar Abdullah claimed he was informed only on February 8 at 8 pm that the hanging would be carried out in 12 hours.
Afzal's family has sought permission to offer their last respects at his grave. However, sources say Afzal is buried inside the Tihar Jail premises and making the exact location public could lead to a safety issue for the high security jail.
