Mumbai: The Mumbai police have launched an intensive anti-speeding drive over the eastern express highway.
The punishment is not just a simple fine. Your driving license will be confiscated and returned only after a court hearing.
The anti-speeding drive comes close on the heels of the traffic police initiatives against drunken driving and unnecessary honking.
“We have already caught 550 drivers in the last one week,” says Sub Inspector, Marve.
In 2007, 55 people died in accidents caused by over speeding and in a bid to reduce this number the police has decided to strictly implement the new rule.
The speed limit is fixed for vehicles. It is 60 kmph for cars, 40 kmph for trucks and 50 kmph for bikers.
Since January 2008, the traffic department has booked 1096 offenders for dangerous driving and most of the offenders are truck and dumper drivers.
The licenses of the offenders are being confiscated and can only be recovered after a hearing in the court. The police claim that the drive has helped reduce accidents.
"In the last week, there has been no accident on the Eastern express highway. There is a satisfaction that we are saving lives,” says DCP Traffic Police, Mumbai, Harish Baijal.
Automobile associations and motorists in the city feel that norms are too difficult to adhere to.
“The speed limit should be increased or else the highways will be jammed,” says Western India Automobile association, Nitin Dossa.
So for those who caught racing in Dhoom style with alcohol in their blood, then be ready to spend a day in jail.
